ABOUT THE LAB

COMET Lab is built on teamwork, creativity, and the shared effort of every member. With over 100 students contributing to a variety of exciting projects, it’s important to stay organized and accountable. These guidelines aren’t just rules – they’re here to help us work together more effectively, meet our goals, and make the most of our time in the lab.

LAB GUIDELINES

1. Timekeeping Guidelines

  • Clock In/Out: Students must clock in and out using Kuali Time for actual work hours only.
  • Work Hour Limits:
    • Most students work up to 10 hours/week; leadership roles may work up to 20 hours.
    • F-1 visa holders must not exceed 20 hours/week across all IU jobs, as per ICE regulations.
  • Breaks: Students working over six consecutive hours must take a 30-minute break, clocking out during this time

2. Engagement and Task Completion

  • Responsiveness: Acknowledge task assignments within 24 hours and provide a timeline for completion.
  • Task Completion: Meet deadlines and communicate delays in advance.
  • Weekly Updates: Regularly update team leaders on progress.

3. Performance Tracking

  • Weekly Reviews: Attendance and task completion are reviewed weekly.
  • Warnings:
    • Week 2: First warning if performance falls below expectations.
    • Week 3: Second warning issued if no improvement.
    • Week 4: Third warning; further action may affect participation in projects.
    • Week 5: Persistent underperformance may lead to removal from COMET Lab.

4. Recognition and Accountability

  • Performance Scores: A performance ranking sheet is updated bi-weekly for transparency.
  • High Performers: Outstanding contributors are recognized and considered for leadership roles.
